SPECIALIZATION

I have some general remarks on
specialization are scattered around...          And some special remarks
                                                on being a generalist:

   LAST_INTELLECTUALS                                  GENERAL

     What if specialization is a                       NEED_TO_KNOW
     necessary evil?  Maybe the real
     issues are too hard for the
     general audience to follow.
     Physicists are not required to
     drop quantum mechanics because
     most people find it confusing,
     why should, say, economists, be
     subjected to different rules?

   STAGGERING

     I sometimes think that
     the trouble is that many
     artists don't really
     know anything but art.

     They may lament the
     specialization of the
     technical world, but
     they're boxed into
     their own speciality.

     They can conceive of
     nothing worth doing
     but a personal art,
     an autobiographical
     art, and so every
     moment is reduced to
     the question of
     "can I use this?"
