David Leonhardt in his daily newsletter/briefing/editorial
sent via the NYT mailing list has many times commented
disapprovingly on the leadership provided by the CDC
on Covid.

He makes the reasonable point that when the CDC second-guesses
how the public will react before making a recommendation--
instead of just keeping it simple and trying to speak the
truth-- they risk damaging their credibility. Anyone who
is reluctant to follow their advice is free to second-guess
them in return and instead buy into some alternative story.

Leonhardt has returned to this point so often that I began
to wonder what's wrong with him. With so much going on in
the world, is this really one of the most burning issues?

Is he actively trying to undermine the CDC's credibility
rather than trying to get them to preserve it?
