The defense attorney, addressing potential jurors:

   "Some people think black people can't be
    prejudiced against other black people."

Out in the gallery seats, the black woman seated in
front of me audibly snorted at that.


When called up to sit in the box, the judge commented
that they both knew each other from when she served
last.


     When she was finally released by the judge,
     she commented without bothering to turn around--
     unlike most of us, she didn't need to worry about
     being heard:

     "I don't need no paper, do I?"

     "What?" the judge said.

     "I don't need any official documentation that I can--"

     He directed her downstairs.
                                        (Which I hope was excessive
                                        caution, because I didn't
  She left me thinking                  bother with checking in there
  "how can some people                  on the way out, myself.)

  people?"
