   The Leopold von Sacher-Masoch novel,
   "Venus in Furs" (from which we get the
   term masochism, of course), was a
   impressive novel to me, surprisingly       (Or at least, it was
   so, I thought.                              impressive several
                                               decades ago... haven't
   I expected more De Sade (which is           read it since.)
   deranged, philosophical pornography,
   a depiction more of the extreme mental
   state of the author than anything else).

      "Venus in Furs" is actually
      a genuine psychological novel,
      everyone in the story seems
      quite plausible...

           The dominatrix who apparently
           tells herself that she's doing
           it For His Own Good (to help him
           get over his misplaced romantic      That sudden flash
           idealism), but is herself in a       of jealousy and
           state of denial about how much       violence when she
           she's been getting into her          sees Severin glance
           role.                                at the black servant
