NEONEO

                                             March 09, 2007

It dawned on me recently that the prefix
"neo" has acquired a derisive quality
to it. That might be worth investigating.

Are we actively opposed to "the new" now,
after decades of advertising hype promoting
novelty?

Is it all the fault
of the "neo-cons"? The term "neoliberalism" is
                           very clever in some ways...
                           it's confusing at first, but
A friend it pulls off two tricks:
    points out
that "neocon" (1) you can accuse
    is a pretty the "conservatives"
old term, of being "too liberal"
    and it always
had condescending (2) it distances the speaker
connotations to from a contaminated term:
it... whoa to the liberal that
                           dares to call themselves
I guess nobody liberal at this stage.
    likes those
    newbies.

    Everyone likes to
    get into new stuff
    fast so they can
    start lording it
    over the newer
    newbies as soon as
    possible.
