"The Communist Party by the 1970s was a pathetic thing,
at its core a collection of seniors with relatively
little capacity left for direct political organizing,
still ignoring the crimes of Stalinism and deeply
committed to a politics of duplicity. Around these old
Lincoln Brigade vets were a younger circle of African
American activists -- Angela Davis is the name everyone
recognizes -- actually attempting to use the resources of
    this ancient organization. Characteristically, every
left moverment in the Bay area had one or two CP members
whose job it was to be supportive of the movement and
report back to the organization on our "progress" in
on-the-ground socialism. [...] Their behavior was very
much like that of police infilitrators but without the
crazed provocatism. From some of them, I gradually got
an image of what a lifetime committed to the left might
    look like."
