Some of Moira Weigel's praise for Williams'
"Keywords" seems pretty extreme:

    "Although it's deeply erudite,
    the author wears his learning
    lightly; Williams's prose has a
    spring in its step."

I would've said Williams' prose is
leaden, weighted down by the furniture
of references to sources, and sabotaged FORMALIST
by the need to use words to discuss the
changes of meanings in words-- he
struggles to be precise with tools that
resist this precision, because his
central subject is the fluidity of the
meaning of words.
