The wikipedia page for Gestalt Psychology has an entry for
the "Law of Closure" which is very close to the way
Scott McCloud uses the term:

  "... when parts of a whole picture are missing,
  our perception fills in the visual gap"

Their example is an incomplete geometric shape like a
circle or square tends to be perceived at that shape
despite the gaps in it.
