Some people, notably our conservative friends,          This is the third time
eventually start complaining about the lack of          I've gone into this:
respect for Free Speech in places like reddit,
and they start fantasizing about starting some          FREE_SPEECH
alternate forum where they're free to say               POISONED_WELLS
whatever they want.

That's certainly doable, but getting people to
hang around and listen to them seems unlikely.      Be as free with you're

    There's no great mass of people out there
    waiting anxiously for a platform free of
    "censorship"-- anyone who's grown up on the
    net has grown up in a world where the only
    people talking about "free speech" are people
    whining about the freedom to make racist
    jokes and things like that-- this has
    resulted in an entire generation that simply
    doesn't care about the principle of "free
    speech", if anything they regard it as a code
    word for "toxic" behavior.

    And this is probably not not a Good Thing--
    there are reasons free speech was once
    regarded as an important liberal principle...
       
                                                  
    But even someone like me who's been around
    a while can't say that wide-open no-rules       I was socialized by usenet, 
    discussion forums are a great idea. They        where the general idea was: 
    don't really work all that well-- in point                                  
    of fact, I would say nothing works                 o  don't feed the trolls 
    well. Nothing I've yet seen in use seems           o  grow some skin        
    like the Right Way to do it, but damned if         o  rise above insult     
    I know what that Right Way would be.
