But speaking of ideas like
"The New York Times is a CIA front."

Why exactly is that supposed to be
so absurd? Unproven perhaps, possibly
wrong, likely over-simplified... but
why absurd?
If you were running a large intelligence
agency, wouldn't you see some virtue in
having a line into a major newspaper like
The New York Times?
At the very least, it's convienient to
to be able to use Journalism as a cover
if you want to send an agent into some
hotspot quickly.
After decades of the Cold War,
why wouldn't you assume that
The Times had been subverted
by the CIA? What, do you think Well, okay,
they're incompetent or something? maybe they
are. Like I
said, I doubt
the situation
is quite so
simple as the
Times being in
any one pocket,
controlled by
any one interest.
Really, I think you
can see signs of
warring factions
every now and then...
the editorial page
goes one way, and
the front page
another.
