At one point in Cerebus-- which originally was a
satire of commercial comic books, remember,
"Cerebus the Aardvark" was a riff off of the then
popular Barry Windor "Conan the Barbarian"-- The Watcher was a
Dave Sim does some stories with a figure like hold-over from an
the old Kirby/Lee "The Watcher", a character older narrative
named "The Judge". style, with a
                                                         "frame"--
At first, it seems like The Judge
is the authoritative voice, he's POV
      telling you how should understand
the story and it's characters. -- supplied by a
                                                         colorful character.
A little later, this is undercut:
someone else remarks dismissively In OTR radio, "The
about how "The Judge" is awfully Whistler", or "The
judgmental. The door is opened Shadow" himself.
again to other ways of understanding.
                                                         GHOSTS_OF_THE_SHADOW
   It's one of the interesting
chracteristics of Dave Sim's In the comic book
writing: there's no one correct world, there was
way of understanding anything, things like Warren's
no "privileged narrative". "The Crypt Keeper"

       Even *his own opinons* often
don't seem like the last word:

            THE_LONE_HEAD_OF_CEREBUS

       An interesting phenomena:

       The story that seems
       to have escaped the author's
       control and is trying to
       say other things...
